75 Students conferred with BSc. Applied Accounting Degrees at inaugural convocation of CA Sri Lanka’s School of Accounting and Business

The inaugural convocation of the School of Accounting and Business of CA Sri Lanka witnessed the graduation of 75 students, who were conferred with the BSc. Applied Accounting (general) degree after completing their course of study and internship.

The event was held under the patronage of Prof. Malik Ranasinghe, Senior Professor in Civil Engineering at the University of Moratuwa and former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Moratuwa. Students who were part of the degree programme’s inaugural batch in 2013 received their degrees at the convocation held on 25th November 2016.

Within a short span of time, the degree which has been approved by the University Grants Commission, has also been internationally accredited from highly respected accounting organisations such as the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) and CPA Australia, while leading Australian universities such as Deakin and La Trobe offer transfer opportunities to students following the CA Sri Lanka Applied Accounting degree.

Extending his congratulations to the graduates, CA Sri Lanka President Mr. Lasantha Wickremasinghe said that education, skill and experience are vital factors for any professional to succeed in their career.  “So, develop your knowledge and skills and gather as much experience as possible, because more and more organisations are seeking multi-skilled professionals,” he said.

While emphasizing that Sri Lanka was at the threshold of renewed development, Mr. Wickremasinghe urged the graduates to be part of Sri Lanka’s revival by thinking out of the box and becoming the vision and leadership Sri Lanka needs, to help the country progress to the top.

He highlighted that the BSc. Applied Accounting degree has within a relatively short period of time gone on to become one of the most sought after degree programmes offered in the country. He reiterated that the programme was not only followed by local students but even foreign students were following the degree due to its contemporary curriculum. “A unique feature of the BSc. Degree in Applied Accounting is that it doesn’t produce just graduates, but instead it produces ‘employable graduates’,” Mr. Wickremasinghe added.

Chairman of the School of Accounting and Business, Mr. Heshana Kuruppu said that the inaugural convocation marks yet another milestone for both CA Sri Lanka and the School of Accounting and Business. “Today, we witness 75 students of the CA Sri Lanka School of Accounting and Business graduate at the inaugural convocation. This is the beginning of their journey towards greater success as a professional, as they have received a firm foundation for a rewarding and successful career in the field of accounting,” he said.

Mr. Kuruppu said that as one of the country’s pioneering and leading professional organisations, CA Sri Lanka has gained recognition and prestige locally as well as internationally in delivering a world-renowned accounting qualification, and as a step forward and to meet the continuous market demands, CA Sri Lanka introduced the BSc. Degree in Applied Accounting to fulfil the increasing demands in the field of accounting, and to help Sri Lanka progress as a nation with the necessary skilled workforce with the sound academic background.

“Launched in 2013, the BSc. Degree in Applied Accounting fulfils aspirations of bright students who don’t get an opportunity to enter state universities and those who are seeking high quality academic education. There is no doubt that the initiative taken by CA Sri Lanka in 2013 to introduce a recognized degree has proved to be very successful mission, and the ever increasing number of students, both local and foreign is testament to this,” he added.

Meanwhile, Chief Executive Officer of CA Sri Lanka Mr. Aruna Alwis said that a unique aspect of the degree programme is that the delivery of the degree moves away from the traditional method, and is not only limited to lectures but also encourages self-study by students and is designed to sharpen their soft skills, communication and presentation skills, and the use of technical methods. “This ensures that the student is a well-rounded graduate, fully equipped with the entrepreneurial capabilities, and has the potential to climb the ladder of success as a professional,” he said.

CA Sri Lanka is the only professional body in the country to offer a professional qualification and an academic degree in accounting. As a part of the degree programme’s curriculum, students who follow the degree are granted internships at leading companies in Sri Lanka enabling them to gain sufficient practical exposure in technical areas and develop necessary skills.
